Cities in South Africa


South Africa has always been known for its beauty. Its more like an amalgamation of mountains and beaches. Wildlife is another integral part of South Africa which is also a major tourist attraction. The climactic condition and vegetation of the place is in perfect sync with the wild life population of the region.

Officially there are nine cities in South Africa. However these cities are necessarily not the capital cities of the nine provinces. These cities are:

  • Cape Town: This is the third most populated city of South Africa and also the provincial capital of the Western Cape. Cape Town is popular for its harbor and also for being home to some well known landmarks of South Africa like the Cape Point and the Table Mountain. Because of its geography it is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities of the world. This place is very well connected by air. It harbors the second-largest airport in South Africa and several domestic and international flights operate from here.
    • East London: Among the cities at South Africa, East London is situated on the Indian Ocean and located on the Eastern Cape Province. Over the past few years the tourism industry has flourished here. The city is better known as Buffalo City. The East Coast Resorts offer a tranquil setting for a family holiday.
    • Port Elizabeth is one of the major seaports in South Africa. Of all the South Africa cities, this city is nicknamed "The Friendly City" or "The Windy City". It stretches 16 km along Algoa Bay. This city is also one of the major tourist attractions of South Africa as it is located at the end of the picturesque Garden Route along the Cape. The city boasts of having simple fine beaches which are a great favorite among the tourists.
    • Pietermaritzburg is the second largest city of the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This city is also a major producer of timber, dairy products and has a vast reserve of aluminum. Popularly it is known as Maritzburg.
    • Durban: Among the cities in South Africa, Durban is the second most populous city. It is famous for being the busiest port in Africa and is also the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal. It has emerged as a major tourist destination because of its beaches and warm tropical climate.
    • Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng and also the wealthiest province in South Africa. This place is also well known for being the center of diamond and gold trade.
    • Bloemfontein: This city is the capital of the Free State Province of South Africa. It is also known as the "city of roses" as these flowers in abundance there. The annual rose festival is also organized here.
    Pretoria, Polokwane and East Rand are some of the other cities of South Africa. During your South Africa tours if you miss going to these different cities of South Africa, then you are definitely missing something.
