Bargaining is not something you can count on while shopping there at Costa Rica as most of the products have fixed prices.
While shopping in Costa Rica you should make it a point of buying coffee. The most widely available brand here is CafE Brit which is sold in dark, light and espresso roasts. Almost all the souvenir shops and the hotels at Costa Rica propagate this brand. Apart from this other blends and high end brands are also available. If you want to gift coffee packs to someone back home, then you have the option to purchase fresh roasted coffee beans in elegant gift packages. However it is always better to buy the grounded beans instead of the whole ones. If you want to bag the best deal, it is always better to purchase coffee at the grocery stores. The quality is same but the price is lot more cheap.
If you like to spice up your dishes a bit, then you can select from the different types of sauces available in the Costa Rican market. There is a range of spicy salsa made from pineapple, mango, tamarind and passion fruit which definitely can add more perk to your dishes. These sauces also make for great gifts back home.
While shopping in Costa Rica, you can also buy the usual Costa Rican woodcarvings. There are elegant art pieces, napkin holders and wooden bowls which are “must” buys. You can also procure hardwood creations of Barry Biensanz at better gift shops and hotels across the country. Costa Rica's national symbol, oxcart is also a popular souvenir item, carved from wood and available in different shapes and colors. Sarchi at Costa Rica is the hub of colorfully painted oxcarts. Other souvenir items like rocking chairs carved from wood and leather are also equally popular.
Pottery is also an important part of Costa Rica shopping. The main center of pottery can be found at a small town in Central Guanacaste which is Guaitil. Most of the gift shops here exhibit low fired simple ceramic potteries for sale.
Jewelry like reproductions of pre-Columbian gold jewelry either silver or gold plated or in solid gold also make great gift items. You can also purchase these for your own personal use too. Part from this carved stone figurines although heavy are good buys too.
