Cities in Costa Rica


Costa Rica is regarded as a very popular tourist destination. Wildlife, tropical rain forest and beautiful beaches are its characteristic features. There are several cities in Costa Rica which are worth mentioning. Some of these cities are:

  • San Jose: Its is the largest city of Costa Rica and also its capital. Sprawling across the Central Valley, the city is located in the center of the country. This city is the political and economic hub of Costa Rica. It is also considered to be the major transportation hub of Central American nation. Among the different capitals of Latin America, this is one of the youngest.
  • Alajuela: This is the capital city of the province of Alajuela. Its is also the birth place of Costa Rica's national hero Juan Santamaria. It is also considered to be the most extensive province of the country.
  • Escazu: It is the capital of the canton of Escazu which falls under the province of San Jose in Costa Rica. The residence of several embassies are located here. The most significant among them are the residences of the British and the US ambassadors.
  • Cartago: This is the capital of Cartago province. Until 1823 it was the capital of Costa Rica. It was founded by Spanish conquistador Juan Vasquez de Coronado in the year 1563. Among the cities in Costa Rica, this city is the place where the Spanish settled first.
  • Golfito: This is a port town, located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica in Puntarenas province. This town lies in-between a hill and bay and has two parts. There is a residential area near the port, the shopping area to the south apart from the town proper.
  • Libera: Among the Costa Rica cities, Libero is the capital of the Guanacaste province and is hardly four hours away from San Jose when traveled by bus. The city boasts of having a modern style church, not unlike other cities in Costa Rica. Every year during the month of July, an expo is organized here in this city.


  • Nicoya: This is one of the tourist destinations of Costa Rica. During your Costa Rica tours, if you are traveling to national parks or Guanacaste's beaches, then you have to go en route this way. The city's economy largely thrives on cattle and agriculture.
  • Limon: Here lies the country's main Caribbean port. Among all the cities at Costa Rica, the majority of the African citizens reside in this place. Back in late 19th century, they were brought to Limon from San Jose.
  • Puntarenas: This city harbors one of the main ports of the country which is Caldera. Several tourists, specially surfers are attracted to this place as it provides you ample opportunity for surfing and other water sports activities. Tourists who are on their way to Montverde, for them this is an ideal stop over.

    San Franciso, Tibas, Santa Ana and San Ramon are few other cities of Costa Rica which are worth visiting.
