Patagonia

The Republic of Chile is located in South America and bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west. It occupies a strip between Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It has a large and varied coastline stretching across around 6,000 km. The territory of Chile also includes the prominent Pacific Islands of Juan Fernandez, Easter Island, and Salas Y Gomez. Chile is an important tourist destination with many attractions including islands, beaches, valleys, mountains, and national parks.

Patagonia is a part of South America and located between Argentina and Chile. It incorporates a portion of the Andes Mountain region and borders the Colorado River. The parts that belong to the territory of Chile includes southern end of Valdivia, Los Lagos, Puerto Montt, and Chiloe. The site of Monte Verde is a popular tourist destination along with Cape Horn, Tierra del Fuego, and the regions of Aisen. The Chilean Patagonia is marked from the Pacific Ocean in Valdivia towards the Andes Mountain peaks.

The Tehueches patagons were a tribe that moved from eastern part of the country to west with every change in season for hunting. This nomad tribe is regarded as the original inhabitant of the place.

Patagonia Chile


The Patagonia of Chile is classified under two territories-
  • Patagonia Insular
  • Cordillera Patagonica

    The Patagonian Insular comprises the channels along the Pacific Ocean and until the Tierra del Fuego. The Cordillera Patagonica has the glaciers, steep mountains, valleys, and a fertile spoil until the region where the Argentina Patagonia begins

    Climate of Patagonia


    The Patagonia of Chile has mixed climatic conditions on the other side of the two territories. The eastern slope of the Patagonia is warmer for the tourists and humid during the summer months. The island of Puerto Montt is colder. It is a place for trekking for adventure tourists. The westerly winds influence the ecosystem of the place largely. The weather also affects the flora and fauna in Chile’s Patagonia region.

    Tourism in Patagonia


    Tourism in Patagonia region became a major draw for development. Several hotels and restaurants were built in the 19th century. Developments in tourism at the place also increased opportunities and scope of employment. Upmarket visitors, international tourists, and biologists began visiting the place end of the 19th century. The valley tours of Patagonia, trekking, and cruises became major attractions of the Chilean Patagonia.
    The passenger cruises take you around Cape Horn, the Perito Moreno glacier, and the Valdes Peninsula.

    Attractions of Patagonia


    The flora and fauna of the place is particularly interesting to the tourists. The diverse locations and climate of the Chilean Patagonia makes it a conservation center for many species of endangered animals of the country. During walking tours along the slopes, you may come across animals like the guanaco, the cougar, the zorro, or Brazilian fox. These species are available in large variety and number.

    The other animals found in the two Patagonian territories are the Zorrino, tuco-tuco, or the Ctenomys magellanicus, species of mountain rodents found on the Andes. These are prominent mammals of the Patagonia in Chile. The guanaco and rhea are hunted for food by the native tribe.

    There is abundant bird life in this open sanctuary. Migratory birds fly from parts of Europe and Southeast Asia. You can easily come across the green parakeets, hummingbirds, and types of waterfowl. Cranes are found near the streams. Marine world life also attracts the children. The streams, Colorado River, and channels of the Pacific Ocean are dotted with Magellanic Penguins, Orca, elephant seals, and walruses. The natural reserve at the Valdes Peninsula in Patagonia region of Chile makes it a World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO.
