Brunei is a state in South East Asia’s Borneo Island. Some portion of the island state is part of Malaysia and Indonesia. The origin of Brunei is traced to the 7th century. It tanks high on the Human Development Index of South East Asian countries. Crude oil and natural gas are the main contributors to the nation’s economy. Brunei International Airport is the main gateway to the country.

  • Islamic (lunar) New Year, 1432 Hijrah

    Venue: Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Kampung Kiarong

    It is an auspicious day for the Muslims in Brunei. This day marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and New Year. The day is determined by the lunar cycles. It is a day of celebration in the mosques and homes. Feast, cultural programs, and religious sermons often take place in parts of the state. Even this year, December 7 would be an Islamic New Year. The event is being organized by the Islamic Eminence Development Section, Ministry of Religious Affairs in Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Kampung Kiarong.

    In a Gregorian calendar year, the Islamic New Year might take place twice.
  • Fobissea Music Festival
    Date: 12 November FOBISSEA Music Festival is a youth festival participated by students from Brunei schools and colleges. Students from other South Asian countries are also part of the event. Musical talents of amateur college students are highlighted in this event. This year, the event is scheduled on November 12, 2010. They play traditional music with unique equipments. Contemporary Arabian, Malaysian, and Indonesian songs would enlighten the evening. There are individual and group concerts held here. The visitors can learn about different musical styles in the workshops.

  • His Majesty the Sultan's Birthday:
    This is a national festival of Brunei celebrated by the Muslims. The festival is held in July every year. Mass prayers are offered to commemorate the birthday of Sultan. The most important part of this ceremony is the address made by His Majesty in the Istana Nurul Iman. The event is followed with an investiture ceremony and grand fest. The people from four districts in Brunei meet on this day.

  • Festival of Sacrifice
    Date: 8 December
    This is among the top Brunei current events and festivals. The festival honors Prophet Ibrahim and commemorates his actions by sacrificing cows and goats. It is an important day in the Islamic calendar. The meat after sacrifice is distributed among the poor people.

  • Christmas
    Date: 25 December
    The churches are the main venues to celebrate Christmas, holy day of the Christians. The Christian community in Brunei celebrates this occasion by offering prayers, singing carols, and exchanging gifts.
