Bahamas comprises 29 islands, various cities, towns, and inland ports. The estimated population of the country is around 330,100. It is called the Commonwealth of Bahamas and lies along the Atlantic Oceans. Among the Bahamas cities, Nassau is the largest and the capital city of Bahamas.

    Nassau


    Nassau city is the capital of Bahamas. It is also the largest city in the country with a population of around 260,000 according to the 2008 census. At least 80 percent of Bahamas population resides in Bahamas.

    The Lynden Pindling International Airport is the largest airport of Bahamas and is 16 km from Nassau city centre. It is the major gateway for the tourists to Bahamas and Nassau. There are daily flights connecting Nassau with many other international destinations. There are flights to United Kingdom, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands. New Providence Island serves as the federal head of the state where many administrative offices are situated.

    Tourists can visit downtown Nassau for entertainment. It is a popular hub of activities with many shopping centers, places of dining, and other interesting places to visit. The busiest and most vibrant part of downtown area is the Bay Street.

    Freeport


    Freeport is another prominent city of Bahamas located on the island of Grand Bahama. It is the second most populous place in Bahamas after Nassau. The Grand Bahama International Airport serves the city population estimated around 27,000. It is the biggest free trading zone on the island as well. The city enjoys a subtropical climate that experiences mild winters and summers with low precipitations.

    Tourism has been one of the major contributors to the economy of the place since 2004. The city is home to many natural protected parks. The Rand Nature Centre, Petersons Cay, and Lucayan National Park are popular tourist destinations in the state.

    West End


    West End, referred to as the “Settlement Point”, is the oldest Bahamas town. It is located on Grand Bahamas Island. It is also known for being the oldest western settlement of the island nation. Presently, West End is the capital of the Grand Bahama Island and is a place of important commercial activities. It also holds the distinction of being the third largest island settlement to be on the island.

    Major developments in this town took place during the 1950s. The Grand Bahama Club and Jack Tar Marina were two important landmarks in the city. Marina opened in 1960, survived up to its fame for only few years. The economy of the place also suffered in the mid 20th century. Import and export of West End fell and the economy of Grand Bahama also suffered. Marina in 2001 was renamed as Old Bahama Bay. The docks were renovated and other significant renovations were made including cutting out of more canals. Tourism was encouraged after the canals were bordered by luxury hotels and resorts, luxury condos, and vacation homes. Today, Old Bahamas Bay in West End is an important stop-over for tourists and foreigners many of whom have their own summer homes here.

    The Ginn Resort took up maintenance and operation of the Old Bahama Bay. Major investments have flowed to the West End area since the takeover in March, 2007. Plans are on to built Marina, a luxury resort, other home suites on 1,720 acres. The project is called Ginn Sur Mer involves a cost of 5 billion USD. This is a major step of tourism development in any of Bahamas cities and towns.

    Coopers Town


    Coopers Town is the third important city in the Bahamas with a population of around 6,000 people. The population of Coopers Town is largely centered in the northern most end of the island. Coopers Town is a city in Abaco Island, which is the third largest in land area in Bahamas. Harvesting and agriculture is the main profession of the people. This beautiful city is known for growing pineapple and sea-sponge for several centuries. But, due to a lack of harbor within Coopers Town these industries have suffered since the 20th century.
