Traditionally, a traditional couple tying the knot in Mexico is sponsored financially by their Godparents, who act as the padrinos. They act as the mentors to the bride and groom throughout the engagement and even after, they are married. The padrinos even at times presents the couple with a rosary and a Bible during the ceremony.

During the vow exchange, a white ribbon or a rosary named as “lasso” is wrapped around the necks of the couple. This ribbon represents their unison in marriage.

Traditionally, a Mexican groom presents the bride with thirteen gold coins, which are blessed by the priest during the ceremony. This custom signifies groom's commitment in supporting his new wife.

Red beads are generally, tossed at the couple, when they leave the church with a belief of bringing in good luck for them.

Traditionally, during the reception, all the guest join hands to form a shape of heart around the newly married couple, as they have their first dance.

It is customary in Mexico that a paper mach known as a pinata is suspended from the ceiling at the wedding reception in the country. It generally, forms a shape of heart or an animal that is filled with candy. It is hung by a string and swatted at by children. When it breaks, the candies are shared among the guests.

The wedding cake in Mexico is generally a fruitcake that is soaked in rum.

Traditionally, the bride wears a mantilla veil, a slim dress with a bolero jacket, or even Flamenco – style dress with ruffles at hem. The groom may wear a bolero jacket with tight fitting pants, a Mexican Wedding shirt with loose drawstring pants, or even a matadorian outfit.

Mexican Wedding Food and Music

A traditional Mexican food includes beans, spicy rice, and tortilla dishes of chicken and beef. Serving of a traditional cold drink Sangria is included, which is made from red or white wine mixed with brandy, sugar, fruit juice and soda water.
