The Academy Awards 2008 are scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 24, 2008. The Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood has again been chosen the venue for the awards. The entire event of Oscars 2008 will be televised live across the United States by the ABC Television Network.

Every year, right after the New Year fervor is almost dying down, the entertainment community and cinema lovers worldwide turn to the much-awaited Academy Awards. Likewise, the Academy Awards 2008 will witness the Oscar fever gripping hundreds of millions of film fans, and rising to the crescendo on February 24, 2008, when people worldwide would remain glued to their television sets in eager anticipation of who will win the highest honor in filmmaking.
After having recognized excellence in film-making achievement for more than seven decades, the annual presentation of the Oscars has become the most distinguished activity of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Jon Stewart has been roped in to host the 80th Academy Awards. This will be his second stint as the host of the show, after having previously hosted the 78th Academy awards. Gil Cates will be the producer of the award ceremony, producing it for a record 14th time.
Achievements in a maximum of 25 regular categories will be honored on February 24, 2008, at the Academy Awards 2008 presentation. However, the actual number of Oscar statuettes that will be handed out will remain unknown even to the Academy until the sealed envelopes are opened on Oscar Night. Though the number of categories and special awards are known before the ceremony, there’s possibility of ties as well as of multiple recipients sharing the award in certain categories. This makes the exact number of Oscar statuettes to be handed out at 2008 Academy Awards somewhat unpredictable.
Officially known as the Academy Award of Merit, the gold-plated statuette is most renowned by its nickname – Oscar. The Oscar statuette is 13½ inches tall and 8½ pounds heavy. The design of the statuette has remained the same as during its original conception, but the size of the base has changed considerably until the present standard was accepted in 1945.
The three-dimensional statuette depicting the figure of a knight standing on a reel of film, with his hands gripping a sword, was designed by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons and sculpted by George Stanley.
