Batten Airport, also referred to as the John H Batten Airport is Racine’s chief airport located at a distance of the 2 miles to the north west of the city. Sprawling across a land area of 450 acres, the Batten Airport serves corporate as well as private aircrafts. The airport is modern and updated with all the requisite facilities that catapult Batten Airport to a status where it can compete with the other airports adhering to the international standards.

Batten Airport has a FAA identifier of RAC and is perched at an elevation of the 674 feet above the sea level. The airport became operational in January, 1941 and is open to the civilians. Batten Airport is privately owned by Racine Commercial Aprt Corp. It enjoys the distinction of being the largest privately owned, public use, reliever airport in entire United States. The well-updated lighting system facilitates the take-off and touch down of flights even during the low light hours of dusk and dawn. The availability of fuel aids in the refueling of the flights scheduled for the airport. It has hangars and tiedowns that facilitate aircraft parking.

The Batten Airport features two runways. The cheif runway is 6,556 feet long, 100 feet wide and built of concrete. It is facilitated with runway lighting and an Instrument Landing System. The crosswind runway 4,824 feet in length and is paved with asphalt. Both runways have lighted, full-length taxiways to bolster the safety measures.


Batten Airport serves as the base for 93 aircrafts that are categorized in the following way;

  • Multi engine airplanes – 15
  • Jet airplanes – 8
  • Helicopters – 1
According to the statistics of the twelve month period ending on 21st September, 2006, the Batten Airport has tackled 129 flight operations per day among which 53% comprise of local general aviation, 43% constitute transient general aviation and 4% comprise of air taxi.
