Traveling within San Francisco in cable cars is an experience to savor. The cars provide transportation to some of the most popular areas of the city. Visitors to the city must not miss out on taking a trip on the cable cars, which is an icon of San Francisco. Cable cars are operated all seven days in a week and have special schedules on weekends. There are three routes, in which the cable cars operate. These three routes are:

  • Powell-Hyde (Line 60)
  • Powell-Mason (Line 59)
  • California Street (Line 61)

Travelers can use both cash and passes, while traveling in cable cars. You can buy the ticket from the conductor or the turnaround. If you are visiting the city, it is recommended that you get passes for traveling by cable cars. The passes will allow you ride on streetcars, buses, and cable cars. For one day the pass costs $13, for three days it is $20 and for seven days it will cost you $26. For traveling within San Francisco one can also get monthly passes made. The rate for this are - for youths aged 5-17 it is $15, for adults aged 18-64 it is $60, for senior citizens above 65 years and disabled people the fare is $15.

The cable car platform at Powell and Market streets is the originating station for Powell-Mason and Powell- Hyde lines. Starting at Powell/ Market platform the Powell-Mason line runs from there to Nob Hill to the Bay Street at Fisherman's Wharf. The Powell-Hyde line that begins at the Powell Market platform runs to Nob and Russian before finishing at the Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square. Both these lines end at different areas of Fisherman's Wharf. The California Street line passes through the Financial District, Chinatown over Nob Hill and comes to a halt at the Van Ness Avenue.
