There was an era when compared to other western countries, religion was more prominent at France. Paris here holds an important place as it has some living reminders of Roman, Jewish and Christian history.
The Saint Chapelle, Paris was initially built by Louis IX, King of France, to preserve precious relics like the Image of Edessa, Christ's crown of thorns and some other relics of Christ. These relics were actually in the possession of Louis since August 1239 who had bought it from the Byzantine emperor Baldwin II at an exorbitant sum of 135,000 livres. The Saint Chapelle in Paris in France on the other hand cost only 40,000 livres to build.
This chapel is located within the Palais de Justice Complex on the Ile de la Cite which is in the heart of the city. The work of the chapel initially started in January 1246 which completed in April 1248. the upper half of the chapel serves as a royal chapel and is the place where the relics are exhibited. The lower part which is the palace's parish is actually dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The most beautiful aspect of the Saint Chapelle at Paris in France is its stained glasses. It is also visually very appealing. Although no designer builder's name is associated with the construction of the Saint Chapelle, Paris but the name of Pierre de Montreuil is often associated with it.
The chapel suffered tremendous destruction during the period of French Revolution. During this period the steeple and the baldachin were removed, various reliquaries like the grand chasse were melted down and the valuable relics dispersed. In the year 1885 its exemplary restoration was completed. Efforts were made to revive the original drawings and descriptions of the chapel which are still surviving.
There is a replica of this chapel at Chicago, Illinois. This chapel has been a national historical monument since 1862. apart from this chapel there are other places too where tourists can go for sightseeing in Paris.
