Pantheon

Paris, the capital city of France, is situated on River Seine. Paris has a population of 9.93 million. Today it is considered to be an important cultural and business center of the world. Several factors like education, politics, entertainment, fashion, media, science and arts has made Paris emerge as a global city. Pantheon, Paris lies on top of the Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, very near to the Soborn University and the Jardin du Luxembourg. It also looks over the Quartier Latin.
Pantheon
When in the year 1744, King Louis XV was suffering from serious illness, he vowed to build a church, dedicated to Sainte-Genevieve if he recovered. Soon after his recovered he entrusted the Marquis of Marigny with the task of constructing a church, replacing the 6th century basilica. In 1755, the Marquis entrusted the architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot to design the new church.

The construction of the church started in 1757, but due to financial crunch, the building took 34 years for completion. Finally in the year 1791 in the midst of French Revolution, the construction was completed. The history of the Pantheon, Paris is very appealing. During the same year as of French Revolution, the Constituent Assembly of the Revolution decided to transform the church into a temple and accommodate the remains of the great men there. Architect Quatremere de Quincy adapted the building to its new function as a pantheon. In 1806 the building was converted into a church again but again since the year 1885, the Pantheon in Paris in France is serving as a civic building.

The portico of the Pantheon at Paris in France has large Corinthian columns which were modeled after the second century pantheon in Rome. The dome has a height of 279 feet while the floor plan has a Greek-cross layout and is 110 m long and 85 m wide.

Some of the famous people who have been buried here at Pantheon, Paris are Victor Hugo, Jean Monnet, Voltaire, Emile Zola and Marie and Pierre Curie. It is also here at the Pantheon, the astronomer Jean Bernard Leon Foucault for the first time held his experiment where he proved the world spins around its axis. You can get a splendid view of Paris from the colonnade around the dome of the building. Keeping safety norms in view, going up there is only possible if accompanied by a guide. When you are coming from the Jardin du luxembourg through the rue Scoufflot, you can get the best view of the Pantheon. However apart from this, there are also several other places worth for sightseeing in Paris.
