History of the French Open


French Open tennis event also called Roland Garros is considered to be among the best tennis tournaments in the world. In recent times it is going to be held in 2008. The game is played in clay courts where the ball gets slowed down and gets a very high bounce. A separate skill is needed to play in these courts. The French Open has been witness to the exploits of the Clay Court experts like Rafael Nadal, Gustavo Kuerten and Juan Carlos Ferrero. History of the French Open dates back to 1891 when it was unfolded as a national tournament. At that time it was known as the Championat de France International de Tennis. The tournament for the women started in 1897. The year 1912 saw a change in the format of the French Open with the game being played on a red clay surface. Till 1924 the tournament was open to the tennis players only from France. From the year 1925 the competition was opened to the international competitors. French Open History got further enriched with the completion of a new stadium in 1928 named after a World War I pilot named Roland Garros. The new stadium with its state of the art Center Court called Court Philippe Chatrier hosted Davis Cup Challenge.


In the History of French Open Tennis one of the significant events occurred in 1968 when the event attained the unique distinction of being an "open" Grand Slam competition with room for both the armatures and the professionals.
