Forget Flying! Save Big on Indian Rail Fares

Wednesday 27 February 2008

The low cost airlines have proved to be all talk and no substance with the amount of tax often increasing the value of the ticket by more than half. These lucrative rates can only provide a solution to First AC train travelers. Even foreigners taking up India tours prefer to experience the charm of Indian railways. Especially after the announcement of the new rail budget for the 2008 financial year, rail travel is bound to get more affordable for citizens from all walks of life.

Another drawback of the so-called “low cost airlines” is the dissatisfaction with service experienced by the general public and foreigners enjoying India tours. It must be noted that a majority of foreigners do not fly these airlines and prefer to book a flight with Jet Airways, Indian Airlines, Kingfisher, and Air India. A large section of tourists from other nations also prefer to commute by train to enjoy an Indian experience while on India tours. Some such low cost airlines do not even provide water, while others charge high rates for meals and beverages. In contrast, a trip by train is inclusive of overnight bedding and lots of free snacks and meals, especially if one is traveling by First AC. The service is first-rate and the meals are scrumptious.

Many world travel guides also recommend Indian railways for their quaint charm. Trains like Palace on Wheels and the Deccan Odyssey are a major attraction for foreign tourists and high on the list of excellent train travel in many world travel guides. As jet fuel prices increase worldwide, a slash in the rates is not a possibility. In such a situation, rail fares emerge as the clear winner. Fly only if you must and if you don’t have the time to travel in a train that chugs along the way as it reminds you of your childhood days.
