About Grand Bassin

?

Grand Bassin is located in the center of Mauritius, at an elevation of around 1800 feet above sea surface. It is regarded as the most holy Hindu site for worship in Mauritius. There is a temple beside this lake, which is devoted to Lord Shiva and other deities like Lakshmi, Hanuman, and other Gods. At the time of Shiva Ratri, large numbers of devotees march bare feet in Mauritius from their houses to this sacred lake.

?

Background of Grand Bassin??

?

Beginning of the Maha Shivratri - In 1897, Shri Jhummon Giri Gosagne, a priest (pujari) of Triolet dreamt that the water of the Grand Bassin Lake is coming up from the ‘Jahnvi’, consequently creating a portion of Ganga. People knew about this dream quickly and this made a significant excitement in the Hindu society. The next year, devotees walked to Grand Bassin to gather its water to present to Lord Shiva at the time of Maha Shivaratri. During that period, the lake was named as the ‘Pari Talao’

At the time of Maha Shivaratri, majority of the pilgrims depart their homes and begin a trip to Grand Bassin by walking. It has been a custom that volunteer groups provide drinks and food to the devotees (the pilgrims).

?

What the legends say

?

The Hindu fables say that the Lord Shiva, with sacred Ganges water rested on his head, and his wife Parvati were traveling round the earth, when he discovered an uninhabited, picturesque island and made a decision to set down on it. While doing so, Lord Shiva poured some water of the holy Ganges River onto the island and made a tiny lake. He stated that some people who resided beside the riversides in India would subsequently live on this island and worship her there.

?

Shiva Statue - Mangal Mahadev?

?

There is a statue of God Shiva along Grand Bassin, which is 108 feet tall. The statue was established in 2007 and the "Sthapan" was performed at the time of the Maha Shivratri festival of 2008. The Shiva Statue by this holy lake is also the tallest statue in the country. Currently, plans are being made for constructing a statue of Durga Maa Bhavani alongside the statue of Mangal Mahadev. This statue will also be 108 feet tall and will be completed by 2011 and opened in the same year.
