Rose Hill town gained significant recognition during the 1700s, when malaria became a growing epidemic in the city of Port Louis. This resulted in the partial evacuation of the affected city, as people shifted to cooler regions, free from mosquitoes. Such places mainly included Rose Hill and Beau Bassin, which eventually became over populated.

History of Rose Hill:
The town was under the European rule for over two hundred years. As history has it, the locale had two European rulers, namely the French (1722 to 1810) and the British (1810 to 1968). The town initially belonged to the rural quarter which was conceded on 30th April, 1759. Blondeau, the proprietor of Roche Bonne Sugar Factory, formed a village called Blondeauville, in the year 1852. On either side of the workers camp of the factory attractive buildings were constructed. A few years down the line, the name of the village was changed from Blondeauville to Rose Hill.
