Gan Island

Located in Seenu Atoll (Addu Atoll), Gan Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Maldives. It is one of the biggest islands in the Maldives.

Gan Island is the southernmost island of Seenu or Addu Atoll of the Maldives. It is also the southernmost island in the country. It is relatively bigger than other islands in the Republic of Maldives.

Gan Island is the second largest island of the Seenu or Addu atoll. The island encompasses an expanse of 2.2561 km². Gan Island was earlier peopled, but its local people were transported to the adjacent islands as soon as the British naval and airbases were set up. From very early ages, the island had been frequently having human presence. There were big orchards of coconut plants, yam plants, casava, and on the Gan Island. The word "Gan" originated from the Sanskrit expression "Grama", which stands for "village".

At present, there is a hotel and an international airport in Gan Island. These facilities have been set up to fulfill multiple requirements of the travelers. The island is connected to the adjacent islands of Hithadhoo, Maradu, and Feydu, by land bridges.

Gan International Airport (IATA: GAN, ICAO: VRMG) is situated on the island of Gan in Seenu Atoll (also named as Addu Atoll) in the Republic of Maldives.

First constructed by the British Royal Navy, and shifted to the Royal Air Force as RAF Gan, it was a military airbase used during World War II and till the 1970s. The British Air Force transferred the ownership to the Government of Maldives and it was used as a domestic airport. Of late, the airport has been improved to global standards to accommodate overseas flights with the emergence of tourist resorts in the area.
