Fuvahmulah Island

Fuvahmulah is a large island in Maldives based on its land area and the municipal divisions. It also has many places of attractions for the tourists.

Fuvahmulah is a detached island in the Maldives and the second largest administrative division of the nation after Male with the name Gnaviyani Atoll or Nyaviyani Atoll. The island inhabitants are based in the nine municipal divisions and speak the Dhivehi language, known as Mulaki baha.

Fuvahmulah means “island of the Areca nut Palms”. As the name implies, it is famous for growing and production of variety of Areca nuts to other parts of Maldives. At least one third of the population is engaged in Areca nut trade and sale. The island originally called the Mulah.

Fuvahmulah Island geography


The island stretches up to 5 km in length and is wide by 1.2 km. There is a submerged reef and is the main island attraction. Fuvahmulah was earlier a small coral island and with a saltwater lagoon forming a harbor. The lagoon does not exist today but there are two small lakes, wetlands, and marshy fields. The north lake of the island is Dhadimagi-Kilhi and the southern lake is Bandaara-Kilhi. In the southern end of the beach there is a forest indicating an island that existed in the past.

A beautiful sandy beach exists at the northern end of the island in Dhadimagi-Kilhi district. The locals named this beach as Thundu. The sand particles are often like pebbles form naturally due to changes in the earth surface.

Municipal divisions in Fuvahmulah Island


Most of the island’s population is based in the nine municipal divisions. The divisions are from North to South.

  • Dhadimago
  • Diguvando (both stretching from East to West shore)
  • Hodhado
  • Dhashokubaa
  • Madhado

    Four main divisions occupied the Southern part of the island. The places included in this region are:
  • Malegan
  • Dundigan lying to East
  • Miskimmago and
  • Funado to West.

    Dhadimago


    This is the largest of the nine divisions on the island. The places of attractions on Dhadimago Fuvahmulah Island include the following:

    Dhiguvando

  • Aruffanno- A traditional harbor

    Hodhado


    It is the largest district considering the number of pathways and routes that connects the place with other parts of the island. The village and the fishing culture are the interesting features of the place. You can also visit the Anbule Athiri, the traditional harbor here and the Havitta village.

    Madhado


    Today, this is the smallest district in on this large island. The most important attraction is the Dhiraagu Communications antenna. The antenna is the tallest structure of the island also in the nation. Other attractions include:

    Malegan


    Malegan is a village facing the northeastern side of the island. Place of interest here includes:
