The city was also known as Mahal. Previously, Male was a fenced city, enclosed by munitions and entrances (doroshi). Gan'duvaru, or the Royal Palace was demolished together with the beautiful fortresses (kotte) and citadels (buruzu) when the city was modernized under the reign of President Ibrahim Nasir once the kingdom was removed from power. Of late, the island has been substantially extended with landfilling activities. The official airline of the Maldives, Maldivian, is headquartered in Male
In spite of the fact that Male is geologically situated in the Kaafu Atoll, it is not regarded as a portion governmentally. Male Island comprises the core area of the city. There are three other islands that form the city. A business port is situated on Male Island. It works as the center of all business and trade operations in the nation.
The main island is extremely developed, with the urbanized region typically occupying almost the whole atoll. Gan Island was earlier colonized, but its residents were shifted to bordering islands once the British naval and airbase was constructed. The island had been constantly having human occupancy from very prehistoric ages. There were big irrigated areas of casava, yam plants, and coconut plants on this island. The word "Gan" has been derived from the Sanskrit word "Grama", implying "village".
Gan Island now features a hotel and an airport, satisfying various needs of the tourists and is joined by land bridges to the adjacent islands of Maradu, Feydu, and Hithadhoo.
Fuvahmulah
Fuvahmulah is a big individual island (of its own accord, a little separate atoll) in the Maldives. Fuvahmulah is one of the administrative divisions of the country under the name Nyaviyani Atoll or Gnaviyani Atoll. The residents here converse in a particular type of the Dhivehi dialect, called as Mulaki baha.
The name of this island suggests "Island of the Areca nut palms", Fuvah (or "Fua") in the regional language. Other cities in the world such as Guwahati in Assam, India and Penang in Malaysia have also been named after this nut. The original name of the island could have just been Mulah, but was named Fuvahmulah (the Mulah with the arecanut palms) to differentiate it from Boli Mulah – one more major island in prehistoric Maldives.
A number of geography experts and the navigation maps utilized the name of the island as Fua Mulaku. In old French maps, the island came out with the name Poue Molluque.
Hithaadhoo
Hithaadhoo serves as the capital of Seenu Atoll, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, as well as of Dhekunu Province in the South. The city is located on the island of the same name, the westernmost part of Seenu (Addu Atoll). In terms of population, Hithaadhoo ranks second after Male, the capital of the country.
