The Venice Carnival, with its masked balls and exquisite costumes, is a very important event in every Venetian's calender as they wait for it eagerly all year. St Mark's square, the theatres, and the popular 'campi' are full of locals as well as tourists who come to get a good taste of the culture of Venice with musical, theatrical, acrobatic and dance performances.
This year too with two action packed and fun filled weeks, Events of Venice Carnival 2008 will include processions, masquerades, traditional ceremonies, music and all-round festivities among the canals, squares and palaces of this beautiful city. The carnival which is one of the most well known and awaited in the European continent, is happening from 26th January to 5th February. The city during the carnival is infested with musicians, acrobats, theatre troupes and merry makers from all over the world.
For people who want a taste of aristocracy and elegance, can look forward to events in the carnival like the masqued balls where you go dressed up in periodic costumes, traditional masks and fancy hats totally concealing your identity and thereby feeling the rich past of this attractive past of this beautiful city.
The carnival, with its tradition of wearing masks has begun in 1268. There have been some ups and downs but the carnival has been an annual affair for the past 25 years. The traditional bauto mask, cloak and tricorn hat were favored because they concealed the identity of their wearers.
Every year the Venice Carnival event is inspired by a new theme. Last year's edition was dedicated to Carlo Goldoni. The year 2007 was the three-hundred year anniversary of the birth of Venice's most celebrated playwright. The 2007 Carnival was a popular and exciting one. It provided a mosaic of arts, made up of numerous pieces, with various and entertaining themes: live music, comedy, acrobats, dancing, and costume parades with competitions for the most beautiful masks.
