Italy Language

Italy language is not all about speaking Italian, it has many shades to it which makes it difficult to explain in one go.

If you are an international tourist in Italy, it is important for you to know what languages are spoken in the country. Well, Italy official language is Italian, which is spoken by most people in the nation.

All regions of the country have their own specific dialects, like:

  • Tuscan happens to be the regional dialect for Tuscany, which is also considered to be the standard language for the country.
  • In many parts of Italy like Valle d’Aosta and Piedmonte, French is the predominant language spoken by the people. This also happens to be the second language on the said regions.
  • In places like Trieste-Gorizia, Slovene language is in major use.
  • German is spoken by a certain community of people in Italy. The province of Bolzano- Bozen also known as South Tyrol, which happens to be a division of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, mostly has German speaking people. The place was given up by the Austrians in the year 1919. Between Austria and Australia, there was an agreement in the year 1946 and 1969.  According to the agreement Austria looks over the well being of the German community in the region. The community also demands for greater cultural and linguistic autonomy.

As a national education system is established in the country, there has been a significant decline in the diversity of lingoes spoken within the nation. With the rise and growth of mass media and also the economic boom, during the 1950s and 1960s there had been a further standardization in Italy language.
