Vézelay, Church and Hill


France is a country, which is located at Western Europe and comprises of various overseas islands and territories. Following its foundation in the 9th century, the Benediction abbey of Vezelay attained the relics of St Mary Magdalene. According to this legend, a monk named Baudillon had brought relics of Mary Magdalene to Vezelay from Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, not long before the end of the first millennium. Later in 1058, it was confirmed by the Pope that the relics were genuine. This led to a sudden surge in the number of pilgrims which continues even today.


Vézelay, Church and Hill in France is also a major stating point for pilgrims who were going to Santiago de Compostela. It is one of the most important centers of medieval pilgrimage. This not only attracted pilgrims from far flung areas but also accentuated the wealth they brought to town. Before departing for the Holy Lands, the Frankish and English factions of the Third Crusade met at Vézelay, Church and Hill at France in 1189. This church is a masterpiece of the Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture.
