Later in 1058, it was confirmed by the Pope that the relics were genuine. This led to a sudden surge in the number of pilgrims which continues even today.

Vézelay, Church and Hill in France is also a major stating point for pilgrims who were going to Santiago de Compostela. It is one of the most important centers of medieval pilgrimage. This not only attracted pilgrims from far flung areas but also accentuated the wealth they brought to town. Before departing for the Holy Lands, the Frankish and English factions of the Third Crusade met at Vézelay, Church and Hill at France in 1189. This church is a masterpiece of the Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture.
