Chateau de Vitre

The first stone structure of the Chateau de Vitre was constructed during the 11th century commissioned by Robert I of Vitre town. The present day, triangle like form of the doorway was a renovation conducted in the 13 th century by Andre III, another baron from Vitre.

It served as a royal residence for many centuries before being transformed into a prison that occupied the northern part of the castle. It became a barrack during 1876 and 1877.

Present attractions include the architecture of the building, the historic places within the castle, and the small museum opened in 1876. The castle courtyard has a boy’s school.
