Theatres Romains de Fourviere
Theatres Romains de Fourviere, Lyon, at 6 rue de l'Antiquaille, is a Roman theater-odeum-temple complex, in a park towards the south of the church in Lyon. It is the most ancient of its kind in France, constructed as ordered by Augustus from 17 to 15 BC. Eventually it was developed further during the reign of Hadrian. The odeum, kept for musical concerts, was earlier hugely ornamented. Mosaics of porphyry and marble still gladly adorn the orchestra floor. The third building of the premises was a shrine dedicated to the goddess Cybele, or Sibella in 160 AD. Unfortunately today only the foundations of the building remain.

A relic from the times of the rule of the Roman Empire, the ruins of this amphitheater of Theatres Romains de Fourviere, Lyon is over 2,000 years old. With its backdrop as the Fourviere hill, placed amid the Roman town, the place is a wonderful setting for theatrical performances. The venue has hosted several stunning performances by musical greats in the past. The archaeological site can be visited daily 9am to 7pm.
