2008 Beijing Summer Paralympic Sports

Games for the disabled started in 1948 when Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving World War II veterans in Stoke Mandeville, England. It happened for the first time in Olympic style in Rome in 1960, now called Paralympics. These multi sport events for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities take place in the same year as the Olympic Games. The 2008 Summer Paralympic Sports will take place in the capital city of China, Beijing.

The 13th edition of the Summer Paralympic Sports in Beijing will take place in September 2008 from 6th to 17th. With a shared slogan, One World One Dream, with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, athletes belonging to various disability categories from all over globe will come to be a part of this sporting fiesta. Organized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the governing body of Paralympic sports, Beijing Paralympic Sports will have 20 different disciplines with rowing being the newest inclusion from this year. Most of the games will take place in the People’s Republic of China, while equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong and sailing events in Qingdao.


The schedule for the 2008 Beijing Summer Paralympics Sports is given below

  • Archery Matches 10th to 12th September, Finals 13th to 15th September
  • Athletics 8th to 17th September
  • Boccia Matches 7, 8, 9 & 11th September, Finals 10th and 12th September
  • Cycling Road events 12th to 14th September Track events 7th to 11th September
  • Equestrian 8th to 12th September
  • Football 5-a-side Matches 7, 9, 11 & 13th September Finals 15th September
  • Football 7-a-side Matches 8, 10, 12 & 14th September Finals 16th September
  • Goalball Matches 7th to 13th September Finals 14th September
  • Judo 7th to 9th September
  • Powerlifting 9th to 11th September and 13th to 16th September
  • Rowing Matches 9th & 10th September Finals 11th September
  • Sailing Matches 8th to 12th September Finals 13th September
  • Shooting 7th to 12th September
  • Swimming 7th to 15th September
  • Table Tennis Matches 7, 8, 11, 12, 13 & 14th September Finals 9th & 15th September
  • Volleyball (Sitting) Matches 7th to 13th September Finals 14th & 15th September
  • Wheelchair Basketball Matches 7th to 14th September Finals 15th & 16th September
  • Wheelchair Fencing 13th to 15th September
  • Wheelchair Rugby Matches 6th to 9th September Finals 10th September
  • Wheelchair Tennis Matches 2nd to 7th September Finals 8th & 9th September
  • Closing Ceremony 17th September
