Football 7-a-side

Paralympic football is the customized adaptation of football for athletes with a disability. Played using International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA) rules with a few essential alterations to the field of play, equipment, numbers of players, and other rules and regulations, Football 7-a-side is for athletes with cerebral palsy. Football 7-a-side is one of the events in the 2008 Beijing Summer Paralympics, the 13th edition of the Summer Paralympics, which will take place in September 2008 from 6th to 17th.
Football 7 a Side
Football 7-a-side is played by sportspersons with cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders, including stroke and traumatic brain injury. The governing body under whose rules and regulations the sports is played is Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CP-ISRA). The sport is played with changed and customized FIFA rules. The changes are:

  • Smaller size of the field of play
  • The number of players reduced
  • No offside rule
  • One-handed throw-ins are allowed
Matches last for 70 minutes with two evenly distributed halves and a 15 minute break in between.

Players competing in Football 7-a-side are classified into different sport classes based on the extent of their disability to ensure competition among athletes with equal caliber.
  • C5: Athletes having problems while walking and running, but not while standing or when they are kicking the ball.
  • C6: Athletes having control and co-ordination problems with their upper limbs while running.
  • C7: Athletes having hemiplegia.
  • C8: Minimally disabled athletes meeting the eligibility criteria and have a disability which is impacting football.

Teams must play a minimum number of one class C5 or C6 player at all times. Not more than three players belonging to class C8 are allowed to play at the same time.

The first international competition in Football 7-a-side happened at the 1978 CP-ISRA International Games which took place Edinburgh, Scotland. It made its appearance in the Summer Paralympic Games at the 1984 Summer Paralympics in New York, and since then has been an integral part of the Paralympics.

The Football 7-a-side events in the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing will take place on 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, and the final will happen on 16th September.
