Athletics, a sport quite common in various sporting festivals worldwide involves lot of strength and stamina. And it is one of the events in the 2008 Beijing Summer Paralympics, the 13th edition of the Summer Paralympics, which will take place in September 2008 from 6th to 17th.

The Athletics event in the Paralympics is a revised version of the sport of Athletics for sportspersons with a disability. Open to athletes in all disability classes, the Paralympics have events which include track, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus throw, javelin and club throw, pentathlon and the marathon. There are 36 events equally distributed among male and female athletes but have classifications according to the class of disability. The track events include 100 m, 200 m, 800 m, 1500 m, 5000 m, 10,000 m, 4 x 100 m relay and 4 x 400 m relay.
Following the rules of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and regulations imposed by the Athletics Committee of the International Paralympics Committee (IPC), the Paralympics is the place for the physically disabled to show the world that a barrier can’t stop human spirit. People competing in wheelchairs, some with prosthetic limbs, blind athletes with guides reflect the will power they have to overcome mortal disabilities.
The sport started 50 years ago in a rehabilitation hospital of Stoke Mandeville where the first race on wheelchair took place among disabled war veterans. It is one of the major events of the Paralympics from the inaugural version held in Rome in the year 1960. In 1976, the Toronto Paralympics saw participants with amputations and vision impairment taking part. The 1980 version witnessed athletes with cerebral palsy competing in athletic events.
The athletic events in the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing will take place from 8th September to 17th September.
