The Beijing Organizing Committee unveiled the medals for the Beijing Paralympic Games of 2008 at a press conference on November 14 2007.The event was attended by leading officials of BOCOG and the China Disabled Persons' Federation, representative of disabled athletes and representatives of the medal sponsor for 2008 Beijing Paralympic-BHP Billiton. Mock-ups of the medals for the Paralympic Games of 2008 were displayed at the Beijing Olympic Media Center.
The medals for the Paralympic Games 2008 marvelously meet the technical requirements of the slogan "Two Games, Equal Splendor" and also perfectly capture the essence of "One World One Dream."
The 2008 Paralympic medal is a jade disc set into the obverse of each medal with the emblem of the Beijing Paralympic Games at the center of the jade disc. White jade has been used for gold medal, gray white jade for silver medal and gray jade for the bronze medal.
The design of the medal hook has its origin in the jade "huang" a ceremonial jade piece with a double dragon pattern and "Pu," which is a reed mat pattern. On the reverse side is the emblem of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the name of the event and "Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games" in Chinese, English and Braille.
The materials, weight, measurements and pattern of the medals have been approved by the IPC. The gold and silver medals have been made with a base of pure silver and the gold medal is plated with six grams of pure gold and each medal has a jade disc set into the surface.
This design fully meets the requirements of the IPC and the design concept and patterns and bear strong resemblance to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, reflecting fairness equality towards all and uphold the spirit of "One World One Dream." The IPC relayed a congratulatory message regarding the design program for the medals in its letter of approval and has given its stamp of approval to the design of these medals for Paralympic Games of 2008.
Extensive research and planning for the design of the medals for the Paralympic Games of 2008 began in November 2006 and led to the formulation of the concepts, requirements, creation methods and development for the Beijing Paralympics medals.

Using the designs for the Beijing Olympics medals as template, specific designers were invited to create the "look" and "feel" of the medals. Designers were invited from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Fine Arts at Tsinghua University and China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation. The designers had already earlier submitted entries in the original campaign for the Beijing Olympic Games medals.
The design of the medals was launched on December 7, 2006 in an explanatory meeting. Through December 31, 2006, the aforesaid organizations submitted a total of 21, two-dimensional designs. On January 9, 2007, at the invitation of BOCOG, leading Chinese experts and scholars from the arts, sculpture, minting and Paralympic sports approved 21 works.
BOCOG then asked the relevant organizations to make modifications and improvements to the designs and the IPC approved the final scheme on September 20 and October 11, 2007, respectively.
