Gymnastics
Beijing was elected as the host city for the2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Sports. In the 112 th session of the IOC the election was held in Moscow and Beijing won the bid leaving aside Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Osaka. The main emblem of the event is “ Dancing Beijing” which was inaugurated in August 2003 and the ceremony was attended by nearly 2,008 persons in a glittering ceremony that was held in the Temple of Heaven.

The emblem consists of a red seal and a calligraphic word. 5 Fuwa dolls are the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Sports which depict fish, giant panda, fire, Tibetan antelope and swallow. There are nearly 302 events in Beijing Olympics and Gymnastics is a major one.
Gymnastics Event originated in ancient Greece. There were gymnasia in all the Greek cities and also a courtyard for activities like jumping, running and wrestling. For a long time the form remained obscure and it was only in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that Johann Freidrich GutsMuth and Freidrich Ludwig Jahn popularized the form. By the end of the nineteenth century the form was popular enough to be included in the Olympic Games of 1896.
Gymnastics has many forms like Artistic gymnastics, Rhythmic gymnastics, Trampoling and Tumbling, Display gymnastics, Aerobic gymnastics, Acrobatic gymnastics and Team Gym. In Artistic Gymnastics there are both men and women events. In the upcoming Gymnastics in 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics there are 14 sets of medals to be given in different categories. Rhythmic gymnastics are primarily meant for the women and in the Olympics there are two medals on the basis of individual events and in groups. In Trampoline there is also a provision of two medals.
