The Medals of the Beijing 2008 Olympics have been specially designed with an inspiration from the Chinese 'bi', the nation's ancient dragon inscribed jade piece. The medals are ideally 70 mm in diameter and 6 mm in thickness. The front part of the medal is designed as directed by the International Olympic Committee - a motif of Nike, the goddess of victory and the Panathinaikos Arena. On the back of the medal the Beijing Olympic emblem is etched in the metal centerpiece. The metal hook is designed according to a ceremonial jade piece the 'huang', with decoration of double dragon motif and 'Pu', the reed mat pattern.

The Medals of the Beijing 2008 Olympics made out of gold and jade stand for nobility and virtue reflecting the traditional Chinese values of morality and honor. Efforts of an international panel of judges, including Mr. Jiang Xiaoyu (BOCOG Vice President and chairman of the panel), Mr. Clinton Dines (BHP Billiton China President) and seven eminent Chinese artists and design specialists have duly brought about the ultimate design into being.
