History of the airport
The history of the airport dates back to 1920 when the first airstrip was laid. Later in 1939 the place came under the Royal Australian Air Force. During 1940 in an air disaster a RAAF Lockheed Hudson crashed into the east side of the airport. One of the people killed in the disaster was James Fairbairn, Minister for Air and Civil Aviation died in the crash. It was after him that the Fairbairn Airbase was named.
