Cairns Airport is one of the major airports in Australia and lies between Mount Whitefield and Trinity Bay. Located 7 km north of the central business district of Cairns, it is one of the busiest airports in Australia. The place has two terminal separated by 200 meters from each other. They are located on the Easter side of the airport. Currently re-construction work is going on in the terminal. Jetstar and Virgin Blue are operating from the Northern end of the domestic terminal. The International terminal at present has six air bridges. The main runway is 3196 meters long. The history of this place dates back to 1928. During this time Tom McDonald used to fly his Gypsy Moth off a sand ridge. He was only able to take off during the high tides. It was later in 1934 that the people of the region started raising money to build the airport. During 1936, three runways were built using 162 hectares of land. In 1962-1967 the runway was increased to 2020 meters for jets to land. By the year 1970-1974, the number of aircrafts was increased and by 1975 the first international service commenced from Cairns to Port Moresby. Later, in 2007 new security systems were implemented in Cairns Airport. In 2008 Jetstar made the first landing of A321. And in 2009, the place was purchased by North Queensland Airport. It was in this year that it became fully equipped to use bar-coded boarding passes in Australia.
